CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — Trick-or-treating is a staple of Halloween celebrations for families all over the United States and West Virginia. However, there are risks and things to stay cautious of when out collecting candy.
Staying cautious when crossing the street, making yourself visible to cars on the road, and staying alert to your surroundings are all things you've probably heard over the years. However, according to Carissa McBurney, community outreach coordinator for the West Virginia Poison Center, there are other things to stay cautious of.
McBurney said that it's important to only take candy that is wrapped and not any open food items.
“Anytime a homemade treat is made, it's best to only accept homemade treats from people that you know and that you trust,” McBurney said.
