SEATTLE — Seattle police shot and killed a man who was reportedly wielding an ax on Thursday afternoon.
Officers were sent to Fifth Avenue South and South Holgate Street around 4:15 p.m. When they arrived, the male was still wielding what Seattle police Chief Shon Barnes described as an "edged-weapon."
Police said the man may have also been armed with a knife. The King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) said the man, at some point, produced a gun.
Officers first tried to subdue the suspect with nonlethal force. When that was ineffective, they shot the man. The suspect died at the scene.
Investigators are still working to determine whether the suspect was threatening anyone in the neighborhood or the officers before he was shot.
