PORTLAND, Ore. — Local governments across the Portland metro area are scrambling to address food insecurity as federal funding delays suspend Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits beginning Friday, affecting more than 757,000 Oregon residents and more than 40 million Americans nationwide.

Nearly 143,000 SNAP participants in Multnomah County stand to lose approximately $6 million in monthly grocery benefits, while jurisdictions from Clackamas to Marion counties implement emergency measures and direct residents to community food resources. More than two dozen states are suing to force the federal government to release emergency funds.
