MASSILLON – City leaders are considering outlawing camping in public spaces.
New legislation before City Council aims to deter people who may be homeless from sleeping overnight or staying long-term on public sidewalks, streets, alleyways and in doorways.
Mayor Jamie Slutz , who proposed the legislation, said he wants a law enacted so police can take action if camping becomes a public hazard or nuisance.
Some people have been seen recently camping downtown under the Lions Lincoln Theatre sign and along parts of the Tuscarawas River, Slutz said.
"We can't have this, and (the Street Department) needs to clean up their messes (when they do leave)," the mayor said, adding that a church official recently told him about a person living in an alcove on church property.
