HANSON, Mass. —

Faculty at Whitman-Hanson schools are keeping their jobs for now, after proposed layoffs were put on hold Thursday night.

According to the district's superintendent, it is facing a nearly $1.4 million deficit for fiscal year 2026.

To address that, the superintendent was proposing 25 layoffs, which included teachers, paraprofessionals and administrative staff.

In addition, five resignations and retirements would not be filled.

The moves would save the district more than $800,000, officials said.

Notification letters were supposed to go out Friday to those impacted. But during an emergency meeting Thursday night, the school committee voted to suspend any action for 30 school days.

It gives the committee time to consider the impact on budget, personnel and more.
