POWELL, Ohio — A second elephant calf born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium this year made his debut on Friday.
Phoebe gave birth to the male Asian elephant on Oct. 21 and weighed in at 222 pounds. The zoo has not named the calf as of Friday.
The calf’s father, Sabu, lives at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. They were paired through a national zoo initiative that aims to support healthy, genetically diverse populations of threatened and endangered species in professional care.
The zoo said it will start in small time increments to support the calf’s current routine. From Oct. 31 through Nov. 2, the calf will be viewable indoors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
