BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - Thousands of North Dakota families could soon turn to food banks for help as federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits run out Nov. 1.
Feeding America has provided a guide on what to donate to food banks focusing on nonperishable items such as: • Peanut butter • Canned soup • Canned fruit • Canned vegetables • Canned stew • Canned fish • Canned beans • Pasta (most prefer whole grain) • Rice (most prefer brown rice) • Whole-grain pasta and brown • Personal care and household items.
Items that cannot be donated include anything perishable, expired products, leftovers, baked goods and food in damaged or open packaging.
Glass containers are discouraged because they can break and contaminate other donations.
