SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Early Friday morning, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation that would ban ICE officers from making arrests in and around state courthouses, hospitals, daycare, and colleges.

Part of the bill establishes a 1,000-foot safe zone around courthouses, and carries a $10,000 penalty in statutory damages.

House Bill 1312 also includes other provisions, including establishing punitave damages against federal officers, including those with the Department of Homeland Security or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, over "particularly egregious conduct," such as wearing face masks, failing to identify themselves as law enforcment, not using body cameras, or deploying crowd-control weapons.
