President Donald Trump called on the Senate GOP on Thursday to use the “nuclear option” in the upper chamber to reopen the federal government.
Trump urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to eliminate the filibuster — a strategy in the upper chamber to delay or block votes on legislation by keeping the debate running. Overcoming a filibuster requires 60 votes in the full Senate.
To eliminate the filibuster, the Senate would need to change its rules with a simple majority vote. Trump argued that Senate Republicans should “take advantage” of Democrats by voting to end the filibuster.
