Don’t even bother asking Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith about this bizarre season for his unit. He’s not into that “negative stuff” when it comes to what has and can go wrong.
But there’s been no shortage of curveballs thrown his way, not to mention an ignominious mistake by a rookie kick returner in Week 2, through eight weeks this season. And yet Smith’s group just keeps producing, from ranking seventh in average yards allowed per kick return, to 11th in punt return average allowed, and of course that guy who wears No. 9.
After another week of Chris Boswell kicking — field goals from an almost unbelievable 56, 50, 48 and 56 yards again — it felt like the right time to ask Smith how this guy just keeps getting better and better, game to game and year to year.
