NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The National City Police Department announced it will conduct a driving under the influence, or DUI, checkpoint in the South Bay this weekend. According to police, the checkpoint location was selected based on local collision data and the frequency of DUI-related arrests. Officers will be screening drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, as well as verifying valid driver's licenses.

Department officials emphasized that checkpoints and patrols serve as a strong deterrent against impaired driving, stating that research shows well-publicized DUI operations can reduce crashes involving impaired drivers
