MORTON, Ill. (WMBD) -- The Midwest Food Bank announced on Friday it will be sending a truckload of meals to Jamaica following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
The food bank will be sending more than 200,000 Tender Mercies meals, which are ready-to-eat servings to provide immediate disaster relief, Midwest Food Bank Executive Director John Cirilli said.
He said Hurricane Melissa was a Category 4 hurricane that triggered landslides, displaced families who were cut off from accessing clean water and food.
The food bank is partnering with Convoy of Hope to help feed the thousands of people who have been displaced.
“Our response is swift because hunger doesn’t wait,” Cirilli said. “These meals provide more than calories; they provide hope, comfort, and strength for those facing unimaginable
