An independent Alberta MLA has raised a relatively rare point of privilege, claiming he was obstructed from performing his duty, something the government’s house leader denies.
Former United Conservative Party (UCP) MLA Peter Guthrie lodged the complaint Thursday against government house leader and Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Minister Joseph Schow.
Guthrie said in the chamber that Schow had informed him the previous evening that he was being placed on the standing committee on private bills. Guthrie further alleged that assignment was made without “consultation, notice or consent.”
In arguing that represented a point of privilege, Guthrie noted he was no longer a member of the UCP caucus and did not answer to the party or its house leader Schow.
