Giant Eagle customers waited in long lines Saturday to exchange pennies for gift cards.

In a statement from Giant Eagle President and CEO Bill Artman, the grocer received more than 100 million pennies across its 200 Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets. Advertisement

"This number is nothing short of amazing," Artman said in the statement. "This incredible experience will ensure we can provide exact change to customers for months to come."

Artman said the exchange resulted in more than $2 million in Giant Eagle gift cards being awarded to customers.

Earlier this week, the company announced customers would be able to convert their pennies into a Giant Eagle gift card worth equal to or twice the value of the pennies exchanged.
