The Columbia City Council on Monday will consider hiring a consulting firm to ensure that short-term rental properties are complying with the city's rules and paying taxes.

The City Council meeting is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Monday at the Daniel Boone City Building, 701 E. Broadway .

Since the city enacted its new rules for short-term rentals such as Airbnb and Vrbo about a year ago, 125 owners of short-term rental properties have applied for permits. However, city officials believe that about 475 properties are functioning as short-term rentals in the city, meaning that only about 26% are in compliance, according to a staff report prepared for the council .
