MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A circle of purple, tears and prayer filled the air Saturday afternoon as survivors and advocates gathered at the Women’s Advocacy Center in Memphis. The group came together for a dove release ceremony, marking the end of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the start of a renewed call for action and compassion.
Ramona Jackson, president and CEO of the Women’s Advocacy Center, said the event symbolized more than remembrance. It was about freedom and survival.
“This symbolizes freedom, the ability to escape from a situation that’s harmful,” Jackson said. “It’s our way of honoring those who’ve had to fight for safety.”
Jackson said the need for awareness and support for people experiencing domestic abuse in Shelby County remains urgent.
