A mayor in the Michoacan region of western Mexico who’d called on the government to do more to fight drug cartels was shot dead on Saturday evening.

Federal and state authorities confirmed the assassination of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, during an event in the city centre, according to national newspaper El Economista .

Two people were arrested in connection with the shooting, while a third assailant died during the incident, the newspaper reported, citing Mexico’s security cabinet.

Manzo had repeatedly called for President Claudia Sheinbaum to do more to fight the nation’s notorious drug cartels, and had asked for more protection from the federal government.

He’d been attending a candlelight ceremony in the city of about 360,000 when he was shot outside a church at about 8 p.m.
