WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Two 140-foot hopper barges were towed away Sunday after they washed up on the shore of Connecticut last week.
The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday that the barges broke off from their moorings and drifted about five miles, likely due to the bad weather at the time. They noted the vessels were empty and had no impact on the environment.
The barges ended up ashore along Woodmont Beach in Milford before strong winds pushed them out to sea. They were then found in West Haven on Friday.
West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer said Friday that winds and difficult tides had temporarily suspended efforts with a tug boat to return the barges to their owner, Buchanan Marine, in New Haven.
In an update on Sunday, the Coast Guard said they were notified that the barges were towed away
