MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Tennessee councilwoman is calling on Governor Bill Lee to suspend the state’s grocery tax every weekend until the federal government shutdown ends.
Memphis City Councilwoman Jerri Green sent a letter to Governor Lee on Saturday morning, urging him to put forward a proposal to the state legislature.
“I am reaching out in regards to the hunger crisis that begins today for nearly 700,000 Tennesseans who receive SNAP benefits due to federal cuts. While I am grateful for your efforts to connect our most vulnerable residents to services offered by nonprofit and faith-based organizations, I am concerned that this may not be enough to reach all who are impacted,” Green began her letter.
