A man who wielded a spade in Derby city centre and violently attacked police officers has been jailed for more than six months.
Jamie Birks, 38, of no fixed address, took the garden tool from a council worker’s trolley and s wung it at numerous advertising boards whilst walking down St Peter’s Street on the afternoon of Friday, September 26.
Two Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) on patrol in the city centre spotted him and shouted at him to put down the spade. A member of the public who knew Birks also tried to calm him down, but he began lashing out.
Another member of the public then tackled Birks to the ground, and the PCSOs grabbed his upper body to keep him to the floor. Birks hit and kicked out at the officers before being taken to a police station.
