LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese is stepping down.

Gov. Jim Pillen made the announcement during a news conference Monday afternoon. Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg will be replacing him.

The governor’s news release called the announcement a “significant office appointment,” but his office did not provide any details on it.

Briese says he and his wife have been talking about an “exit strategy” for him in recent weeks and months. He said it was time for him to spend more time at home. He said he doesn’t have any immediate plans to re-enter public service anytime soon.

The changeup comes hours after former State Sen. Julie Slama announced that she would run for the office .
