WEST BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating an FBI agent in an attempt to steal tens of thousands of dollars from a West Brookfield resident.
According to the West Brookfield Police Department, the incident began after a resident clicked on a malicious computer pop-up, which locked their device.
The schemers, described as part of an organized transnational crime group, posed first as technical support, then as federal agents, demanding that the victim deposit $20,000 into a Bitcoin ATM to “unlock” the computer.
Police said the victim initially tried to comply but had trouble using the machine. At that point, a man pretending to be an FBI agent met the victim in person and took $20,000 in cash. Days later, the same group allegedly attempted to exto
