The Carlyle Fire and Rescue Department faced a long and challenging day earlier this week after responding to a hazardous materials incident involving a tanker rollover.
Deputy Chief Rob Klassen said crews were called out around 6:50 Wednesday morning to a semi rollover that turned out to be carrying anhydrous ammonia. What began as a standard call quickly escalated into a hazardous materials situation.
“The owner of the product immediately activated their emergency response plan, which brought in a hazmat team from Saskatoon,” Klassen explained. “We were there as a standby rescue team in case something went wrong during the offloading process.”
Fortunately, the tanker’s shell wasn’t compromised, preventing any leaks or evacuations. Firefighters stayed on scene until 11 that night, mark
