LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese is stepping down.

Gov. Jim Pillen made the announcement during a news conference Monday afternoon. Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg will be replacing him.

Briese says he and his wife have been talking about an “exit strategy” for him in recent weeks and months. He said it was time for him to spend more time at home, noting that he lives 110 miles away from Lincoln. He said he doesn’t have any immediate plans to re-enter public service anytime soon, but wouldn’t rule it out in the future.

“If called upon, I will consider more public service but at this time I need more time at home. I love this job, I love the people I work with, I love serving Nebraskans but it’s time for me to move on,” he said during the news conference.
