MYSTIC, Conn. (WTNH) -- After two months of treatment and partial amputations, two seals rescued from Block Island are being released from Mystic Aquarium on Tuesday.
The two juvenile gray seals, named Victor and Zuma, "have made remarkable improvements" after they were found "minimally responsive" on the beach with severely wounded hind flippers with multiple fractures and exposed bone that had become infected.
Mystic Aquarium veterinarians amputated digits on both seals' hind flippers, allowing the infections to heal while fully preserving their swimming abilities. The two seals now have a clean bill of health and are ready to return to the ocean.
Victor and Zuma will be released at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, Rhode Island at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
