BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge Parish Council on Aging distributed thousands of food boxes to seniors on Monday as uncertainty over SNAP funding left many worried about their next meal.
Ivy Martin helped direct hundreds of cars through the food drive, with many seniors waiting in line for hours.
“We have a lot, yeah, and they’re still coming,” Martin said. “I don’t ever want to think about that, but I’m glad we’re able to do something special for the seniors.”
The food boxes contained non-perishable items, fresh produce and meat; items that would normally be covered by seniors’ SNAP benefits but are being disrupted by the government shutdown.
