HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and 21 other attorneys general sued the U.S. Department of Education on Monday.
The lawsuit alleges that the department of education unlawfully restricted the eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The program allows government and nonprofit employees to have their federal student loans forgiven after 10 years of service.
Tong, and other attorneys general challenged a federal rule that would make certain state and local governments along with nonprofits ineligible employers for PSLF, if they were determined to have engaged in actions with substantial illegal purpose.
The attorneys general allege that the federal government could essentially punish governments or organizations that participate
