Juneau residents will get additional protection from future glacial floods, thanks to federal support.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will fund repairs and extensions to the city’s HESCO flood barriers at no cost to the City and Borough of Juneau. The barriers were first installed earlier this year to protect homes along the Mendenhall River from glacial outburst floods, which are becoming more frequent. Officials say the barriers successfully prevented damage during August’s floods.
The flood mitigation work is expected to be completed by July 2026. The Corps also plans to finish a technical report by May 2026 to identify a long-term solution for enduring flood protection.
City officials say they are grateful for the federal support and ongoing partnership to safeguard the community
