AUBURN — The game ended. Auburn basketball was in the lead. That was enough to put the Tigers in the win column, but it hardly felt like the home team did enough wire to wire to beat its opponent.
Auburn needed three periods to beat Bethune-Cookman , securing a 95-90 result in overtime to give coach head Steven Pearl a winning debut Monday, Nov 3.
The Tigers looked to have the result in hand in the final seconds of regulation. They were up three points, but an Elyjah Freeman foul on a Bethune-Cookman heave at the buzzer gave Arterio Morris three free throw attempts, all of which he sank. Auburn outscored the Wildcats 14-9 in overtime, making it the only frame in which the leading team wasn't ahead by one point.
