MADISON (WKOW) -- Nov. 10 marks 50 years since one of the most significant maritime tragedies in the Great Lakes.

In 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald departed from Superior, WI. It encountered treacherous weather and sent a final distress message, before sinking into Lake Superior with all 29 crew aboard, just 15 miles northwest of Whitefish Point.

To mark the solemn anniversary, the Wisconsin Historical Society is supporting commemorative efforts including a new state historical marker and a special History Makers Tour event.
