A dense, grey haze continued to smother Delhi on Tuesday, as the city’s air quality remained in the ‘very poor’ category for the third consecutive day. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 309, while several pockets of the capital slipped into ‘severe’ levels.
The AQI for many areas in Delhi went beyond 400, indicating air thick with toxic particles far beyond safe limits.
For Dr. GC Khilnani, a senior pulmonologist who has witnessed Delhi’s pollution crisis for more than three decades, the current situation is depressingly familiar.
“Not anything different from the last 30–35 years. It’s a tad better, but not by much," Dr. Khilnani, Chairman of the PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, said.
