Six Fredericton-area schools are closing because of an “emergency situation,” according to the Anglophone West School District.

The schools that are closed Tuesday are Fredericton High School, George Street Middle School, Nashwaaksis Middle School, Assiniboine Avenue Elementary School, Leo Hayes High School and Barker’s Point Elementary School, according to the district.

Fredericton police are asking the public to avoid the schools until further notice.

“Out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased police presence in and around these areas,” Fredericton Police Force spokesperson Sonya Gilks said.

According to an email sent to families, buses already on the way to the schools will turn around and return students to their homes.
