AMARILLO, Texas ( KFDA /Gray News) – As Medicare open enrollment begins, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning consumers about pervasive scams that could lead to identity theft or financial loss.

“Remember, Medicare will never contact you,” Janna Kiehl, BBB president, said. “The best practice is to protect your Medicare number, Social Security number, banking information and health information at all times and don’t give it to anyone you don’t know or anyone who contacts you out of the blue.”

The open enrollment period allows eligible individuals to sign up or change their Medicare plans.

For Medicare, this runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

Medicare Advantage open enrollment is from Jan. 1 to March 31.
