The man accused of driving a U-Haul truck towards federal officers at Coast Guard Island in Alameda and who was shot in the process has been formally charged, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Brendan Munro Thompson, 26, is charged with assaulting federal officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon, prosecutors said. Thompson accelerated a U-Haul truck as it approached several U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) personnel at the entrance to the base in Alameda on Oct. 23, the complaint says.

Thompson appeared in federal court Tuesday morning to face the charges.

On the night in question, USCG personnel were guarding the bridge connecting Coast Guard Island with Oakland when Thompson drove a 10-foot-long U-Haul truck onto the eastern part of the bridge, the complaint says.
