A "rare" whole-day power outage will plunge an entire North-West town into darkness.

Almost 1500 Queenstown customers will be without power in a planned outage on Saturday, November 8, from 8am to as late as 4pm.

The cause of the blackout is crucial maintenance work being undertaken by TasNetworks , which hopes to boost power reliability for the town.

TasNetworks will be upgrading the local 110kV transmission line, replacing damaged insulators and repairing a damaged mid-span conductor.

The business said the planned work had been postponed twice in two years, with one reason being a storm.

"Failing to perform it now would likely leave Queenstown vulnerable to more, and potentially long, unplanned outages next winter," TasNetworks said.
