6:40 p.m.: An hour before the polls closed, District 1 City Council candidate David Montoya greeted voters outside Carlos Gilbert Elementary on Griffin Street downtown.
Montoya said he was “really excited” about the election.
“We’ve been at this since May,” he said. “I’ve knocked on about 3,500 doors personally since this thing began, and our whole campaign has really been about reaching out to voters — and listening a little bit more than talking because that hasn’t been happening here in the city.”
Montoya said much of voters’ attention has been on the high-profile mayor’s race, which drew eight candidates.
“They know who they’re going to vote for mayor, but they’re not sure about the candidates for City Council,” he said, adding his mother has been reaching out to voters at Fort Ma
