PHOENIX — A North Phoenix family is honoring the life of 12-year-old Dylan Skalina, whose final wish was to raise awareness about a rare and often misunderstood condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) — a disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue.
Dylan collapsed while trick-or-treating with friends on Halloween night. He was rushed to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a brain aneurysm. His family believes the complications were tied to his Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which they say made his blood vessels too fragile to withstand the pressure.
“They think that it was the Ehlers-Danlos that caused the aneurysm because his vasculature just wasn’t strong enough,” Dylan’s mother, Megan Skalina, said.
