OMAHA, Neb. —

The Douglas County Health Department is suggesting that the city of Omaha update its regulations on backyard chickens.

The City Council is considering an ordinance that would limit residents to 10 fowl or fewer, depending on space. It would also make clear that roosters are not allowed in Omaha, rather than relying on noise complaints and nuisance regulations.

It would also allow the health department to add a fee for permits.

One Omaha resident said she doesn't think the changes will affect her much.

Another, Mark Brannen, said it depends on how many chickens you have. The urban farm he co-owns with his wife has 14. He says he's permitted to have 20.

Under the ordinance, anyone already permitted to have more than 10 fowl would have five years to adjust.
