For the second time, New Jersey voters have elected a woman as governor.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill appears to have won the 2025 gubernatorial election — though results are still being counted and unofficial — and will fill the seat being vacated by term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy.

The race was called by Associated Press and NBC at about 9:25 p.m. with 60% of votes tallied.

Sherrill and hundreds of her supporters gathered in the ballroom at the Hilton Hotel in East Brunswick and the mood was celebratory throughout the night. Boisterous applause went through the crowd for other Democratic wins throughout the country, including Virginia's governor's race for Abigail Spanberger and New York City's mayor's race for Zohran Mamdani.
