CHARLESTON — A pair of challengers appear to have unseated two of City Council’s longest serving incumbents, according to unofficial election results.
Aaron Polkey, a nonprofit executive, declared victory over Robert M. Mitchell, who was seeking an eighth term representing District 4 which encompasses the Neck Area and most of the city’s East Side. He spoke before a cheering crowd on a patio of Home Team BBQ on Williman Street.
“Robert Mitchell deserves our appreciation tonight,” Polkey told his supporters.
Just after polls closed and before any returns had been announced, Mitchell gathered with a more subdued group of supporters at Bedford Falls. He told The Post and Courier, “I still feel great, whatever happens.”
With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Polkey had 61 percent of vote
