RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Democrat John DeFrancesco has been elected as the next Rensselaer mayor, according to unofficial results from the Rensselaer County Board of Elections. DeFrancesco ran against incumbent Republican Mike Stammel.

DeFrancesco is the current President of the Rensselaer Common Council. While campaigning, DeFrancesco said he will focus on uniting City Hall, supporting small businesses, and protecting taxpayers.

Stammel was elected mayor in 2019 and as a legislative representative in 2001, 2005, and re-elected in 2009. Over the years, Stammel has focused on strengthening public safety and revitalizing Rensselaer neighborhoods.
