November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and that means it's time to check yourself for symptoms.
Every 26 seconds someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with diabetes, joining the nearly half of Americans who have diabetes or pre-diabetes. But because most of the symptoms by themselves don't seem all that alarming, a trip to the doctor may not feel urgent —especially if you are reluctant to ever go to the doctor.
The symptoms to watch for are 1) being very thirsty or hungry; 2) urinating often; 3) slow-healing cuts; 4) fatigue; 5) blurry vision; and 6) numbness and/or pain in hands or feet.
Taken together, they point one type of diabetes or another.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition, with treatment directed toward managing the amount of sugar in the blood using insulin, diet and exercise.
