A man was shot by police after he was accused of holding his girlfriend hostage in a Northridge neighborhood.

On Nov. 2, Los Angeles police responded to reports of a fight in the 8900 block of Balcom Avenue around 2 a.m. The caller told police they heard loud fighting and a woman crying.

Officers arriving at the home spotted the suspect, Louis Jordan Cortez, standing in the front yard while armed with a handgun and holding a female hostage, LAPD said.

Police told Cortez multiple times to drop the firearm, but he reportedly refused to cooperate. He continued struggling with the victim while still armed with the handgun. Still refusing to surrender, officers fired at Cortez, striking him.

“During the incident, Cortez fired one round from his handgun at the victim,” police said.
