President Donald Trump is already listing out excuses for why Republicans lost big on Election Day.

Democrats Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger won highly watched gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, respectively, on Tuesday night. The two races marked the first significant test for Trump’s Republican Party since his 2024 victory over then-Vice President Kamala Harris last year.

In his first Truth Social post commenting on the election results, Trump suggested that the reasons why Democrats won is because he was not on the ballot and because of the government shutdown. Trump has repeatedly blamed Democrats for the shutdown despite Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress and the White House.
