The Government will aim to reduce GCSE exam time by approximately two-and-a-half to three hours for typical pupils, following a curriculum review which found the current volume of testing to be 'excessive'. Labour's curriculum and assessment review, launched last year, has put forward a recommendation for the Government to slash exam volume at key stage 4 by 10% in its final report.

Additional proposals include introducing new maths and English assessments during Year 8 to enable teachers to spot learning gaps sooner, making citizenship compulsory in primary schools, and reforming the key stage 2 grammar, punctuation and spelling test.
