LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A UPS cargo plane’s left wing caught fire and its engine fell off just before it crashed and exploded after takeoff in Kentucky, according to federal investigators.
The crash and fire Tuesday destroyed the plane and spread to nearby businesses in Louisville, Kentucky.
Authorities say at least 12 people died and others are missing. One "young child" was among the dead.
"We do not expect to find anyone else alive in the area," Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said in a press conference Wednesday. He said they expect the death count to rise again.
Three people were aboard when the plane crashed as it took off for Honolulu from UPS Worldport at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport. Video showed flames on the plane’s left wing and a trail of smoke.
