Just days before the start of COP30 in Brazil , the European Union has finally agreed on a target to reduce emissions by 90 per cent compared to 1990 levels by 2040.

The deal was made following last minute negotiations between environment ministers that lasted through the night and is being presented by the EU as a victory in the battle against climate change .

But the final compromise agreement has angered greens who say it is full of holes and goes against advice from the EU’s own panel of experts.

Climate scientists had urged the EU to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by between 90 to 95 per cent by 2040 in order to be on track for an existing commitment
