MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Nov. 5, 2021, the University of Wisconsin- Madison raised the Ho-Chunk Nation flag for the first time in its history.

The flag was raised at 10 a.m. that day to fly over Bascom Hall, near the center of campus. The flag was raised to honor the land the university was built on as the ancestral home of the Ho-Chunk.

University of Wisconsin- Madison was built on land the Ho-Chunk Nation called “Teejop”, which translates to four lakes.

The land is home to many burial mounds. The ones that remain are still cared for by members of the Ho-Chunk Nation.

At the ceremony, this was the first time the flag was raised, alongside the flags of Wisconsin and the United States.
