ANN ARBOR, MI - Three more people connected with the University of Michigan have been federally charged in connection with an ongoing smuggling case.
Xu Bai and Fengfan Zhang were both charged with conspiracy to smuggle goods into the U.S. for reportedly being the recipients of the several packages of related to nematode research, according to Nov. 4 complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit. Nematodes are a type of roundworm.
A third man, 30-year-old Zhiyong Zhang, was also charged with giving false statements.
All three are from the People’s Republic of China and were in the United States on a J-1 visa through the University of Michigan, according to the complaint. They were working in the lab of Shawn Xu, which studies sensory biology using a type of roundworm as a model orga
