BAY CITY, MI — The former owner of Bay City and Mount Pleasant coin shops has a new conviction on his record for gambling away his customers’ money. He also owes another five-figure sum in restitution, on top of the nearly half-million he’s already been tasked with repaying.

Matthew J. Burton, 53, on Tuesday, Nov. 4, appeared before Bay County Circuit Judge Joseph K. Sheeran and pleaded guilty to false pretenses between $1,000 and $20,000. Per a sentencing agreement, Burton is to receive a delayed sentence for one year, during which time he is to repay approximately $10,000.

If he does so, the five-year felony will be reduced to a misdemeanor.

Burton is currently incarcerated at the Central Michigan Correctional Facility in St. Louis, as an Isabella County judge in July sentenced him
